A well-known businessman in Karatina has been shot dead by a police officer, leading to anger and protests from local residents.
The businessman, identified as George Matheri, was allegedly shot in the head at close range on Sunday night at around 11 p.m. The officer involved was reportedly on patrol at the time. Witnesses said there was a brief confrontation between Matheri and the officer before the shooting happened.
Following the incident, angry residents blocked the Nairobi–Karatina highway, disrupting traffic and damaging property as they protested the killing.
Matheri’s wife, Ann Gathu, said she is devastated by her husband’s death and called for justice. She said her husband did not deserve to be killed and wished the situation had been handled differently.
His father, John Matheri, also appealed to the government to ensure the case is fully investigated. He said his son was only 40 years old and raised concerns over the rising number of killings involving young people.
Local businesswoman Purity Mugo described Matheri as a young entrepreneur who employed many people, saying his death has greatly affected the community. She added that no government official had spoken publicly about the killing at the time.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the incident. IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan confirmed that the police officer involved has been arrested and is being held as investigations continue.
IPOA has sent a rapid response team from its Nyeri office to secure the scene, collect forensic and ballistic evidence, and record witness statements. Hassan urged anyone who witnessed the shooting to come forward with information.
Police leaders have promised to cooperate fully with the investigation. Regional police commander Jasper Ombati said the police service is committed to ensuring justice is served quickly.
Both IPOA and the police have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
